5 Reasons You Should Move in With Your Parents if You Have The Chance

August 14, 2015 · Saving Money

Moving in with your parents when you’re in your twenties can be a humbling experience to say the least. All of a sudden you’re waving goodbye to your independence, returning to your childhood bedroom, and familiarising yourself with your parents’ rules.

However, having lived with my parents for the last year in an attempt to binge-save a deposit for my first house, I can confirm that it’s not all doom and gloom. In fact, I’d go as far as saying that moving in with mum and dad can be an extremely responsible decision financially.

Here are just 5 reasons I think you should move in with your parents if you’re given the chance!

5 Reasons To Move In With Your Parents

1. You can save money towards your future

There’s no shame in turning to your parents when it’s time to save for one of life’s great milestones. With some first-time buyers having to save money for several years before having enough for a deposit on a house, moving in with the ‘rents can drastically speed up the saving process. If you’re dreaming of home ownership and mum and dad are able to share their home with you for a while, it could be a responsible decision.

2. You’ll be able to devote more time to nurturing your career

Not only can moving in with your parents save money, it can also save time. I’m not saying you should spend your evenings in front of the telly while your Dad washes your dishes and your Mum tidies your room, but let’s be honest, you’re probably going to have to do less cooking and cleaning than you would if you lived alone or with friends. Set some time aside to help your parents when you can, but when you’re not doing this, focus on progressing your career. Maybe you can work a couple of hours overtime each week or spend your evenings learning some new skills. Use your new found free time to become a better person and nurture your career.

3. You’ll increase your ability to focus on your goals

Whether your housemates fancy a night out every Friday or a takeaway on a Saturday, saving for your future while living with your friends can be really difficult. By moving in with your parents you’re likely to experience less temptation and battle fewer distractions. Rather than splashing your cash on drinks after work, you can focus on saving money for your house, wedding or round-the-world voyage of exploration.

4. You can pay off your debts

Whether you’ve had payday loan troubles or found yourself getting carried away with store cards, if you have the chance to move in with your parents, this could be a great opportunity to pay off some of your debt and get back on the straight and narrow. Think about how much you’re currently spending on rent, bills and other living costs, and how great it would be if you could put a percentage of this money towards paying off your debts. There’s nothing wrong with needing a helping hand to get out of debt and if your parents are in a position to let you live with them for a while, then who better to turn to for support!

5. You can spend quality time with the people who love you the most

Sorry for getting all cheesy on your there, but I thought I’d end on a lovely note! When we grow up and move out it’s easy to forget about mum and dad. But they won’t be around forever and although you may feel as if you’re old enough not to need their advice and support, they’re always going to be wiser and more knowledgeable than you are. If they’re happy to let you move in for a while, use this opportunity to spend more time with them.
