I first wrote this Bulb Energy review in September 2019 but I’m updating it in May 2021 to add more detail and reflect changing energy prices.
Bulb Energy Review introduction
In 2018 I wrote about how shocked I was to receive a huge and unaffordable energy bill increase from British Gas. Up until that point, I’d been paying just £36 a month to my energy supplier but I received a letter to say that my monthly bills would be rising to a whopping £158!
British Gas claimed that the increase was the result of a backlog of overuse. Apparently, I’d been using more energy than I’d been paying for and so they’d increased my bills to cover the extra cost. This happened in August 2018 and I’d been living in the flat since December 2017. I called them to ask why they couldn’t have notified me of my extra usage earlier. Surely it would have made sense to introduce a more gradual increase, rather than springing much bigger bills on me. Unfortunately, the man I spoke to on the phone wasn’t particularly helpful.
So, I decided to switch to a different supplier. I did some research to determine which would be cheapest and I spotted Bulb Energy at the top of the price comparison lists. Even though Bulb was a newcomer to the world of energy suppliers at the time, I’d read a few Bulb Energy reviews and had heard good things. It had also been featured on Money Saving Expert – something I often look for when trying to decide whether a company is legit or not.
Switching was super quick and easy, so I thought I’d write a Bulb Energy review to help you decide if it’s worth switching too.

How easy is it to switch to Bulb Energy?
I can’t begin to express just how easy it is to switch to Bulb Energy. People often assume that switching energy suppliers is a longwinded process that requires workers to visit your home and install new pipes. Thankfully, this wasn’t the case.
All I had to do was create a Bulb account online (it took about 5 minutes) and tell them that I wanted to switch to them from British Gas. I then received an email to notify me of my switching date and was told the rest of the switching admin would be taken care of on my behalf.
How easy is it to get a Bulb Energy quote?
It’s extremely easy to get a Bulb Energy quote in minutes by clicking this link. I’ve shared screenshots of the process below the button to show how few questions you have to answer. Once you’ve answered the questions, you’ll get an estimate of how much you’ll save and how much your new monthly energy bills should cost.

Will I have to pay any fees to switch?
Nope! If your current supplier charges you any fees when you leave, Bulb will pay these for you.
Is it the cheapest energy supplier for everyone?
Not necessarily. The best tariff for you will depend on multiple factors such as the size of your home, the type of energy you need, and your usage.
However, for the purpose of this post I asked a few friends to type their details into price comparison tools to find out which energy supplier would be best for them. The results showed Bulb either in the very top position or very close to the top. When Bulb didn’t win the top spot, the annual price difference between Bulb’s most suitable tariff and the tariffs from other suppliers was minimal.
Does Bulb have a referral code?
Yes! Once you’re a Bulb customer, you’ll get your own Bulb Energy referral code and you’ll be able to earn £50 for each friend you refer. Your friend will also earn £50 too. If you get a quote and switch using my link below, you and I will each earn £50 once your switch is complete. If you’re just switching electricity, you and I will each earn £25 credit.
Is Bulb Energy really green?
Is Bulb Energy really green? Yes. Bulb is the UK’s biggest green energy supplier and it provides all members with 100% renewable energy. For every unit a customer uses, Bulb makes sure a unit is produced and put on the grid by a renewable source including solar, wind and hydro. Bulb’s gas is 100% carbon neutral and its gas emissions are offset by supporting carbon reduction projects around the world.
Here’s a quote from its website: “By being with Bulb, all our members are helping to protect the planet. The average member lowers their carbon impact by 3.2 tonnes of CO2 a year. That’s the hard work of around 1,590 trees. And for every new member who joins Bulb we donate £2 to Bulb Foundation which makes grants to charities and social enterprises tackling the climate crisis head on.”
Is Bulb Energy any good?
My personal Bulb Energy review: I’ve enjoyed being a Bulb customer over the last few years as the website is easy to use, bills are easy to understand and the customer service is fantastic. It has become a little more expensive as time’s gone on and has received criticism for increasing prices, which I’m obviously not so happy about. However, I’m reluctant to switch because I love all its benefits so much and don’t want to switch to a supplier that’s less transparent or more complicated.
More Bulb Energy reviews
Bulb has received more than 72,000 reviews on Trustpilot and has a score of 4.6. 86% of Trustpilot reviews say it’s ‘excellent’ and just 5% rate it as ‘bad’. Here are just a few Bulb energy supplier reviews that can be found on Trustpilot:
Rob R says: “Always fantastic service, never having to wait more than 30 seconds in a call queue like I had to with the competition. Super friendly and understanding when organising things like smart meter installation, or troubleshooting issues with the smart meter post installation. Genuinely good to deal with, very transparent with billing and cost-per-unit, and seem to genuinely care about their customers. I know this is big business, but these guys are a credit to what they do, and are always very easy to deal with.”
Charlie says: “Easy, efficient, honest energy suppliers – right when I thought they didn’t exist.”
Sherry says: “Great Customer Service. I am on a Pre-payment meter. When my meter broke I called Bulb late afternoon – The next morning it was replaced – plus they sent me a voucher as I was on hold a little longer than they stipulated – I have no complaints whatsoever”
Gosia says: “Bulb is the company I always return to. Whenever I move house my first point on ‘to do’ list is to switch to Bulb. They do not only offer very competitive prices, the customer service is great too. Unlike the BIG companies you can feel the personal approach with Bulb. And their app is useful too. No need to remember or type the meter reading, you can just take a photo of the meter. I recommend Bulb to everyone”
